| Description |
Sodium Hypochlorite is a colorless to light green-yellow liquid having an odor of chlorine. |
| Identification |
(1) When Sodium Hypochlorite is tested by Flame Coloration Test, it shows yellow.
(2) When diluted hydrochloric acid is added to Sodium Hypochlorite, gas is generated.
(3) Dip a red litmus paper in Sodium Hypochlorite. The color of the litmus paper changes to blue, and then fades. |

| Assay |
Weigh accurately about 3 g of Sodium Hypochlorite, and add 50 ml of water. Add 2 g of potassium iodine and 10 ml of diluted acetic acid. Titrate the liberated iodine with 0.1 N sodium thiosulfate (indicator : starch solution). Perform a blank test in the same manner, and make any necessary correction.
